I am currently taking two courses over the summer: Calculus (MAT237) and Complex Variables (MAT334).

The calc prof's name is Shai Cohen, and he is amazing. When I leave his lectures, I have that same old happy-tingley feeling that math used to give me. I feel like Wow! Yes! Calculus is amazing!
He teaches the way things should be taught - he makes it simple, straightforward, and highly lucid. Some of you may not believe this, but that is exactly what math should be.

The other prof is Soheil Homayouni. He is not excellent. Rather, he is boring and disorganized.
At the beginning of term, I really loathed him, because he spent a lot of time talking about wishy-washy quasi-philosophical stuff. Not that that is surprising: complex numbers have a way of making you wonder about what is real and what is contrived.
After a while, he stopped talking so much about how we know nothing, numbers, aah, terror! and got more into the math. It was at this point that I realized that, while I didn't care for the prof, this was a very interesting course.
Last night, in my CV lecture, I went a step further. I realized that this is the most fascinating course I have ever taken.

Take this for example:
We have something called Cauchy's Formula. It says that if f is analytic,
γ is piecewise smooth, and D is a simply-connected domain, then for any point p within γ:
(2πi)^-1∫_γ f(z) dz / (z - p) = f(p)
If p is not within γ, then the integral is zero.

Why is this important? Let's say we want to take some really nasty integral. We are able to define pretty much any real-valued function as a complex-values function. So we convert this ugly integral into a complex-valued integral, and use Cauchy's Formula, i.e., the solution is either zero or 2πif(p).

Or, more simply, this is important because every integral that was too had to do before, now becomes trivial.

Maybe this all sounds dry, but to me this is very exciting stuff. But that's not surprising either: complex numbers are very exciting.

I am eagerly anticipating Half-Blood Prince. I was looking around Mugglenet today, and they say in HBP we will find out just why Dumbledore knows he can trust Snape - I have been dying for this information.
I think I'll whip out Order of the Phoenix to re-read, in preparation for the glorious day - only 9 days to go!
