i know it may be ridiculous, but canada day is one of my favorite holidays of the year, right after winter solstice and my birthday. and yes, my birthday is a national holiday - people, rejoice!
anyway, after many many horrible complications, sean and i ended up downtown, watching the benson and hedges fireworks from a great distance away, and listening to some very political music. there was one song about pierre trudeau that really touched both myself and sean. he was a wonderful man. and as the singer said, i'm sorry that i never met you.
something that's been on my mind a lot is the matter of drugs. growing up, i never thought it was gonna be something i'd ever have to think about, i never thought it would affect my life. but here we are. and i am in the constant fight against hypocrisy - how can i be morally opposed to drugs and still be friends with people who use them? not just friends, but best friends. shouldn't friends be people who share your values and beliefs? and for me, the belief that clear-mindedness is one of the most important virtues a person can posses is very important... but this is the very thing that drug use destroys.
i often hear things about "seeing the world and your body i new ways" or simply "letting go of inhibitions." as far as i'm concerned, these are things that people should deal with within their own minds - that is, if you feel so damn inhibited, perhaps you should work on your self esteem or on your relationships with the people around you. and if you want to open you senses, christ sake, why not try meditating or yoga?
this is just another symptom of our quick-fix society. turn on the t.v. around midday and you'll find a billion infomercials on how to cook, clean, loose weight, or find a mate faster, easier, and with less effort. everyone is just waiting for the day that good food, a clean home, and a sexy body come in pill form.
and besides, why would you want to be, even for a minute, someone other than who you are when you are clear-minded?
