i am divided about the vagina.
i've been giving thought to the matter of the vagina monologues - v-day is coming up, after all.

on the one hand, clearly it is important for women to not feel ashamed of their sexuality, but to accept is as a normal, natural part of themselves.
on the other hand, read this. this article adresses exactly what i don't like about this - a woman is not just her vagina any more than a man is just his penis.
"just" (as in "only" or "limited to") is my least favorite word. nothing is just anything. a part is not a whole. and this notion of associating one's humanhood with an organ strikes me as ridiculous.

in the monologues, there is a section that asks "if your vagina could talk, what would it say?" and "if your vagina wore clothes, what would it wear?"
do i ponder what my wrist would have to say? do i dress my pancreas up? no. these are organs, not separate people.
you know what MY vagina would say? it would make a whistling noise. because it is a tubular bunch of muscles, and were is removed from my body the air passing through it would whistle. that's it. muscles don't talk.

i'm not anti-vagina or anything, but as i said before, a part if not the whole. the whole is the whole. so if women want to embrace their sexuality, i think they must do so in the context of sexuality being only a part of a person, not the whole.

so i guess i'm not so divided.
